Sue Koehler and Daughters

I can't remember many times in my childhood when there wasn't at least one dog, along with various other fauna in our active household, which also included five brothers and sisters.  When the dog had puppies I was the self-appointed midwife to the mama and babies.  When I "grew-up" this love for obstetrics and dogs continued.  In college, I majored in nursing and then worked in the obstetrical departments of several hospitals.  Later I became a nurse practitioner in women's health.  Once I married and had children, allergies in the family kept me from having dogs.  However, since 1988, first with pugs and then with cavaliers I have been committed to the "sport" of dogs, which includes showing, raising and loving these wonderful little animals.  Initially, my daughters were also involved with the dogs but they have since gone out on their own.  Meanwhile, I continue to work as a nurse practitioner, as I jokingly say, "to be able to provide my dogs with the lifestyle to which they have become accustomed !"  I have been very fortunate in being able to have a career which I love that meshes so well with my home life.  Even though I hold a regular job I am able to leave work and come home everyday to check in on my dogs, give them extra attention and time for exercise.

My dogs are part of our family. I have a life-long commitment to each and every one of them.  I strongly support the moral code that as a breeder, I am responsible for the life-long welfare of any dog that I have bred or owned, whether I keep the dog myself or place him/her in a home with others.  My contracts reflect this policy.

We live in the country, in spacious ranch home with a separate room for those dogs who don't sleep in my bed on a regular basis.  There is a door to the outside in the dog's room that gives them direct access to a large securely fenced-in section of our 1.25 acre lot.

I am actively involved in organizations that promote the health and welfare of both pugs and cavaliers.  I am a member of one all-breed dog club and two breed clubs each for pugs and cavaliers, at the regional and the national levels.  I hold or have held various offices in the clubs and serve in various capacities, including heading up the conformation classes at our local all-breed club.  I also chair our annual all-breed AKC dog show.
